There are many benefits documented by research regarding the use of animals in therapeutic settings. Besides aiding in the physical health of individuals, animals can enhance the mental health of people.

Sam and Boo, both golden retrievers, are currently completing their training as certified therapy dogs. Sam and Boo are sisters, and are grand-nieces of Thelma Lou - Prairie Center's original therapy dog - who was lost to cancer in 2005.

The use of animals such as Sam and Boo can help people feel more comfortable with the expression of emotions as well as teaching social skills to those who have difficulty reading cues from their environment. Many people benefit from the unconditional affection from a friendly animal, especially during times of transition or difficulty.
